Del Mak – SHIFT Dance Film

Ever wanted to do something different? When life becomes a routine, step out of the ordinary and follow your dreams.

‘SHIFT’ follows a white-collar worker who escapes the confines of his working environment, exploring & dancing freely through the outside world.

‘SHIFT’ is the brainchild of Award-winning Creative Director & Choreographer Del Mak & Award-winning Director Patrick Ryder and the London based creatives teamed up to create & direct this inspirational narrative-based short dance film.

Having worked on many high profile TV, film, commercials, idents, music videos, with distinguished directors, Del has become a specialist in developing movement for film attaining wide knowledge & experience of various shooting techniques, camera direction & special effects. However growing increasingly frustrated with various factors & time limitations on projects, he felt that the potential of movement on film was never really fulfilled so decided to start conceive his own personal projects in order to push these boundaries.

The idea behind the film was to push the art of dance on film & experiment with it as a narrative medium. The art of dance on camera is rarely recognised these days since the golden era of Hollywood musical & dance. ‘Shift’ demonstrates how movement & dance alone can communicate powerful storytelling.

Shot in 20hrs over 3 locations ‘Shift’ takes the viewer through the beauty of London’s suburban & urban environments.

From the I.C.Movement team, ‘Shift’ stars Renako McDonald, finalist on Got To Dance, UK & Ireland’s biggest reality TV dance talent show as part of contemporary duo ‘Alleviate’.

Renako’s honest and truthful performance was the perfect vehicle for Del’s vision – not only is he massively versatile and able to execute choreography that draws upon different styles, he also shows truth in his stillness, and we as the viewer can’t help but feel that in those moments, that we can still ‘see’ the dance happening inside. As we so often say beautiful movement out of context is the same as ugly movement: here we see the opposite – the way the story, mood, feel, score, choreography, editing, performance, blocking and grading all compliment each other to transport us, and reconnect us with our own dreams…
